The beautiful church of Stella Maris ( Star of the sea ) is located in Porto Cervo on the beautiful Emerald Coast. Stella Maris is a true masterpiece of contemporary sacred architecture. Its sober and soft style in its sinuous walls reflects its white mantle so typically Mediterranean.
The church was designed by architect Michele Busiri Vici in the 1960s at the request of the then Bishop Giovanni Melis and parish priest Don Raimondo Fresi.
The Costa Smeralda was born in that splendid period at the wish of H.H. Prince Karim Aga Khan, and so it was that the Prince who came from the sea chose to pay homage to the land in a noble gesture, a gesture of the highest ecumenical value and inter-religious dialogue.
Under the September sun of a rapidly developing Costa Smeralda, the first stone was laid and blessed, and immediately afterwards, on 16 October, the Stella Maris church received civil recognition by decree of the President of the Republic.
In 1990, beautiful bronze doors, made by Maestro Luciano Minguzzi and donated by important personalities, were added to the front facade of the church.
